Preparing for Moving Day

Beyond our array of moving services, we would also like to suggest a few moving tips so that your relocation goes as smoothly as possible. We also suggest that you read the Your Rights & Responsibilities Booklet located on our Move Documentation page to familiarize yourself with your role in the move and as an A. Arnold client.

Before your moving day, please consider the following:

Personal Information and Items:

Please be sure to remove the following items from your home during the moving process. Keep these items accessible yet secure for the duration of your relocation:

  • Credit Cards
  • Personal Papers
  • Check Books
  • Contact Lenses
  • Deeds
  • Eyeglasses
  • Securities
  • Prescription Medicine
  • Personal Photos

Because of the sensitive nature of these items, transit insurance will not cover them for loss or damage.

Refrigerator/Freezer:

Empty of all food items, clean and dry thoroughly. Unplug and leave doors open for 24 hours prior to loading. Glass shelves should be removed in order for the moving service team to pack.

Electronics:

Disconnect all wires and mark them accordingly. If available, provide the original packing containers to your moving service team. Remove all CDs, tapes, and diskettes from CD players, tape decks, VCRs, DVD players and computer drives.

Antiques/High-Value Items:

If you have high-value items such as silverware and artwork, we recommend a professional appraisal before the items are moved. High-value items are defined as anything with a value in excess of $100.00 per pound per item. They include (but aren't limited to) collections, plants, artwork and memorabilia. High-value monetary items, such as money, fine jewelry, coin collections, etc., are not covered for loss or damage by transit insurances; therefore, we ask that these items not be included with the rest of the goods scheduled to be moved by our team members.

Pressboard Furniture:

Pressboard furniture is not designed to be moved, disassembled or reassembled safely. We recommend you either not move this furniture, or personally dismantle and reassemble the piece. If you do decide to move your pressboard furniture, a waiver of liability will be required.

Dried/Silk Flower Arrangements:

Dried and silk flower arrangements do not hold up well during a move because of their fragility. We will move such items, but no matter the amount of care taken in packing an arrangement, the piece may be damaged and a waiver of liability may be required.

Tax and Closing Documents:

Please make sure your tax and home closing documents are separated and not packed. This is especially important if your shipment is going into storage.

Pets:

If possible, place a pet in a neighbor's home during the move. The doors to your home will be open during the move process, and it's easy for a pet to slip out unnoticed. If the neighbor's house is not an option, please place your pet in a confined area such as a bedroom or bathroom.

Prohibited Items:

For safety reasons, and per Department of Transportation regulations, our moving service teams are prohibited from moving the following items:

  • Aerosol Cans
  • Canned Soft Drinks
  • Explosive Gas Tanks
  • Corrosives
  • Ammunition
  • Any Perishable Foods
  • Paint/Thinners Flammables
  • Propane Tanks

Additional Moving Tips to Consider...

As you prepare for your moving day, the single most important thing you can do is be as organized as possible before the movers arrive. You should:

  1. 1. Avoid scheduling travel arrangements on the same day as your move. It is best to take a flight the following day. This will eliminate rescheduling in the event your move runs late.
  2. 2. Make alternative housing arrangements for your children and pets while the move is taking place. This will help alleviate stress during a move.
  3. 3. Avoid scheduling your closings on the day your move is to take place.
  4. 4. Have a garage sale to get rid of everything you don't want to take with you. Use the money you make to buy something nice for your new home!
  5. 5. Create an inventory list of your possessions. You might want to include the room each item belongs in, the year of purchase, the original cost and the current value.
  6. 6. Be sure to drain water from hoses, refrigerators and washers, as well as gasoline from garden equipment, before moving them.
  7. 7. After you've completely cleaned out your refrigerator, put a handful of fresh coffee or baking soda in a nylon stocking and place it inside to keep the interior fresh.
  8. 8. Since sometimes dressers are moved full, remove all breakables such as watches and jewelry prior to packing.
  9. 9. Pack a few boxes with things you will need when you first arrive at your new home, and mark them "Unpack first." Remember to include basic tools, cleaning supplies, towels, toilet paper, light bulbs, a first aid kit, paper plates and cups, and snack foods.
  10. 10. Take your current phone book with you. You may need to make calls to residents or businesses in your former town.
  11. 11. When moving in electronic appliances, such as PCs, be sure to let them acclimate to room temperature before plugging them in.
  12. 12. If you need to store some of your belongings, it's a good idea to tour the warehouse you are planning to use. Look for cleanliness, organization and security.
